Starrynight Productions, in association with IndyFringe, is honored to announce the winners of the 2010 Indiana New Play Festival.

Uncertainty (or Imprecision), a full-length play by Nick Khron

This play concerns the fates of three friends embarking on the most perilous of all endeavors in the modern world–internet dates. They all have blind dates in the same bar on the same night. Predictably, things…… go wrong, and help arrives in the form of two of the most brilliant minds of the 20th Century, but unfortunately, romance is not these geniuses area of expertise, nor is teamwork.

Cinderella Dressed in Yellow, a full-length play by April Smallwood

Once upon a time in a far away kingdom (equipped with flat screen TVs and rock’n’roll music) there was a poor girl named Cinderella who was very mistreated by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters. But one day Cinderella’s fairy godmother (who happens to be a fantabulous drag queen) intercedes on her behalf by giving her some backless shoes and a limo so she can go to the ball. At the ball she meets her Prince Charming (who isn’t very charming) and falls madly in love with him (for some reason.) As Cinderella flees the ball at the stroke of midnight she leaves behind one of her glass slippers (it was backless after all) and the Prince uses it to find her (cause apparently he can’t just look at her face and know it’s her.) And if you want to hear the rest of the TRUE story of Cinderella come see the freakin’ show.

A Country Drenched in Tears, a one act play written by Cindy Kessler

In the midst of a humanitarian disaster a team of medical professionals have left their homes and jobs behind, and are working tirelessly to help the people of a struggling nation defeat the odds and survive. The team has seen disaster before, but rarely were the affected people grappling with such agonizing poverty before falling victim to catastrophe. Holly Frey and Valerie Himmel, a pair of exceptional nurses, work with Dr. Blake Trenton in the effort to keep their patients alive with few supplies and against great adversity. Like a light in the dark, the songs of a ruined nation lead the team to a better understanding of themselves, as well as forming a profound bond with the resilient people.

Love and Hitchcock, a one act play written by Derrick Krober

Marital unrest, betrayal and attempted murder are at their most ridiculous when a certain book entitled “Alfred Hithcock’s Guide To Murdering Your Spouse” is thrown into the mix.

These plays first went through a development reading series in which actors read the scripts and the audience gave feedback to the playwright. After several re-writes, the scripts were then sent to adjudicators all over the country. All readings were blind. These four plays received the highest critiques and will be featured this year in the Indiana New Play Festival in Bloomington, IN at the Rose Firebay in the Ivy Tech John Waldron Arts Center from November 18-21 and in Indianapolis at the IndyFringe Building from November 26-28.

We are delighted to announce a new workshop series for playwrights and screenwriters called the Script Development Series.

Participants in this series will meet monthly to discuss submitted plays and screenplays with directors, actors and fellow writers. The goal is to turn drafts into producible, quality scripts through workshops, readings and staged readings. The location of the six-month workshop will alternate between Bloomington and Indianapolis to accommodate writers throughout the state.

More information will be coming shortly but all are welcome to submit scripts now!

Script Submission Guidelines

Please note: scripts must be submitted in both electronic and hard copies.

No scripts will be returned.

Previously workshopped or produced scripts are eligible; however, scripts that have received an Equity production or have been filmed by a major studio are not.

Playwrights and screenwriters may submit a maximum of three submissions at the beginning of each six-month Script Development Series.

Each submission must be at least ten pages in length.

Each manuscript must be typed in 12 point font and individually bound or stapled.

A current bio must accompany submission materials to be used for publicity purposes.

The title page must include a name, address, e-mail address and telephone number.

The volume of scripts submitted hampers our ability to comment individually on each work; therefore, Starrynight Productions will not offer criticism.

A fee of $150.00 will be due at the start of each six-month term to cover the cost of hiring actors and facilitation. This fee may need to be adjusted over time to account for increased costs.

Playwrights and screenwriters must meet regularly and be actively involved in the series. Participants are not automatically admitted into the Script Development Series and a production is not guaranteed by Starrynight Productions. However, only works developed in the Script Development Series shall be considered for the annual Indiana New Play Festival hosted by Starrynight Productions and IndyFringe.

The annual Indiana New Play Festival features performances and education seminars for theatre artisans. The festival will offer public performances of the best adjudicated plays developed in the Script Development Series.

Send submissions to:

We explain why the blog has been so quiet--we're editing a film (and all of us still working at our full-time day jobs)! But perhaps there is a stage production in our near future...
Banshee Pick-ups is a post from: Starrynight Productions Blog.

The blog has been quiet at Starrynight but Russell and his team have been busy. We’ve foregone season planning of our theatre productions in favor of producing for the stage when we can catch a break from film editing. The final pick-up date for the Babbling Banshee is July 11-12. After that, all photography will be done.

We haven’t abandoned theatre completely! We will soon be announcing a show that will be performed in late August. Stay tuned for more details.

The discerning among you may have noticed new links on the website and blog pointing to a few social networking sites where Starrynight Productions, Inc. is trying to make a presence. Those of you who have checked out our Twitter feed know that SP founder Russell McGee is currently preparing to film The Babbling Banshee.

These Tweets are the only official communication regarding the film thus far, but I hope to have more details up on the site soon. I can say that Russell and his cast and crew have spent the last two months hustling to get this project together for filming beginning January 31st. Russell likened his pre-production experience to theatre tech week- “except it doesn’t end.”

More to news to come.
