I know very little about the green screen process or doing animation from live capture. I DO know that I’ve been preparing food, balancing the checkbook and generally skirting around two models for the last three weeks. Yesterday, these babies were finally packed up and hauled out to where the green screen work was being done. Russell assures me that, even though the green screen filming took much longer than anticipated, he was very happy with the Saturday’s work.

"...when one side of the house was thatched, the horsemen would go and seek more feathers and, when they returned, not a feather was on the roof."

Russell created two models for Banshee, the house with the unthatched roof and the trio of faery wells, both from the Cormack MacArt tale. This entire sequence will eventually be animated and the models were created for reference. They’re quite detailed for something that won’t even appear in the final cut of the film but, then again, Mr. McGee doesn’t do things by halves. In fact, the faery wells really work. The three heads are hollow, the two above funnel water into the one located centrally below. He actually tested the water flow before firing it in the oven. The model could be placed in a base and rigged as a fountain.

Russell wondered aloud where the models would end up once filming was completed. I looked around our tiny apartment- already over-stuffed with props, costumes and hundreds of DVDs- and mused that my philodrendons had finally rooted and needed to be put in dirt soon. I turned to Russell.

“Wouldn’t the faery wells make awesome plant pots?”

Blink. Stare.

Clearly, he was not impressed.

I tweeted the picture of the faery wells @starrynightprod.

Thank goodness for remembering to breath and not breath because I frankly hate tripods as many of you may have noticed. Tripods are for news people. If we wanted stale shots we’d be making a romantic comedy. You can argue that the shots wouldn’t shake so much, which I counter with, neither do I, only a little bit. I feel like last weekend went really well considering we’re all rather green to productions on this scale. Which, may look small, but is actually about right for a indie flick. The PAs are doing a great job, and hopefully they’ll keep their enthusiasm to freeze their asses off, and be made to stand in statuesque poses to achieve something awesome. I feel like we’ve accomplished quite a bit in one weekend, especially considering we’re keeping the camera moving, and have to deal with that soulless whore mother nature. I look forward to this weekend and hopefully I’ll get pinned down in some awkward position … that doesn’t involve 3 inmates standing over me. LET’S MAKE INDIE MAGIC!

Two Join Our Army of Darkness

I’d like to welcome bloggers Jessie Dyer, Costumes, and Jason Harris, Cinematography, who will hopefully some find time to dazzle us all with their witty insights on the production very soon.

The Case of the Missing Cast List

Erm, yes, I’m aware that an official Banshee film page has yet to appear on the Starrynight website. I have about three-quarters of cast/crew info I need. When the site is updated, you can be sure that it will be announced here.

Castle Aaaaaagh…

Loveland Castle, Ohio. Note the lack of snow. Photo by Jenny McGee.

I had to miss out on filming last week and I will miss out this weekend too due to a long-standing engagement (seeing Spring Awakening in Columbus) but I hope everyone has a good time on location! The castle (and its history) is very cool. And you’ll have it all to yourselves.

The Cormack MacArt tale is probably my favorite of the bunch. I’m looking forward to seeing how Russell integrates animation with the live action filmed at the castle.
